‘A crisis of welcome.’ Sonia Shah on The Next Great Migration
The Trump administration steers the United States in the direction of anti-immigration policies. Other countries pursue similar strategies. But, what do science and history tell us about migration? What makes sense ecologically, societally, ethically?
According to journalist and author Sonia Shah, humans and other animals have migratory instincts for good reason, they encourage diversity. Shah has studied migration, and our attitudes about it. She says the idea that any of us belong solely in one certain place is based on misguided assumptions. She says understanding and embracing the value of migration actually provides hope for our future.
Sonia Shah’s latest book is The Next Great Migration: The Beauty and Terror of Life on the Move. She talked about her book in this Town Hall Seattle live streaming event on June 29. Town Hall’s Wier Harman introduced the program. Event Manager Shane Unger moderated the Q&A.
