“I’ve reached my limit.”

Congressman Rick Larsen, whose district encompasses the northwestern part of Washington state, called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump on Thursday evening.

He is the 90th member of the House to call for or suggest impeachment proceedings for the president. A CNN analysis from Wednesday counted 89 members in favor of impeachment — before Larsen made his statement. All of those are Democrats, and one is an independent who used to be a Republican.

“It doesn't have anything to do with his racist tweets or his past racism,” Larsen told KUOW. “It has to do with the fundamental concept to the United States and that is the value of our citizenship.”

Larsen said Trump “doesn’t appreciate U.S. citizenship, doesn't appreciate what it means to be a U.S. citizen, he doesn't appreciate the dream of being a U.S. citizen that’s held by many around the world.”

He said is not concerning himself with whether impeachment is realistic.

“I'm not looking at the politics of the situation and not looking at what others are doing or not doing,” Larsen said. “I'm looking at my role and responsibility as a member of Congress and exercising that responsibility in this case.”
