Gordon Hempton is the Sound Tracker.

He works in Port Townsend, which is on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state, and is an advocate for quiet places.

“Today, in our isolation chambers called offices, cars and homes, where we have sound-deadening materials installed to keep out the toxic noise pollution, our lives are a lot about not listening," he said.

Listen to this special bonus episode of THE WILD, then take out your headphones, find your own quiet place, and really listen.

THE WILD is a production of KUOW in Seattle in partnership with Chris Morgan and The UPROAR Fund. It is produced by Matt Martin and edited by Jim Gates. It is hosted, produced and written by Chris Morgan. Fact checking by Apryle Craig. Our theme music is by Michael Parker. Produced for the web by Kara McDermott.
