West African nation relations fractured

A trio of West African nations have forged a new bloc in the region that is causing concern among neighbors. Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States — all three nations led by the junta that recently led coups to take power.

The longstanding West African block ECOWAS — Economic Community of West African States — and its member states are concerned about what this new grouping could mean for regional stability.
