Federal funding for KUOW has been eliminated. Here's what you can do to keep KUOW strong.

Early in the morning on July 18, Congress voted to rescind $1.1 billion in federal funding for public media that had been approved earlier this year. This funding was intended to support public broadcasters through fiscal years 2026 and 2027.

This decision is devastating for the millions of Americans who depend on public media every day. Read KUOW’s statement.

Protect KUOW

The best way to support KUOW is to become a monthly, sustaining member.

What you can do to support public media

Make a Gift

While the loss of CPB funding is a serious threat to our work, the vast majority of KUOW’s funding still comes from individual contributors. Consider becoming a KUOW member or upgrading your support.

Give Monthly

The CPB was KUOW's largest sustaining donor, giving KUOW over a million dollars annually. We must now replace that support annually. Giving monthly gives us dependable support we can count on!

Consider other ways to give

Consider donating a vehicle, adding KUOW to your will or trust, or even making a gift of stock! Learn about all the ways you can support KUOW beyond direct donations.

Business Support

If you’re a local business, it's an important time to enhance your brand awareness and support local public media. Learn more about business sponsorship options here.

What to know about federal funding and public media

  • The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 authorized federal funding for public radio and television broadcasting for instructional, educational, and cultural purposes. Today, public media reaches nearly 99% of the United States, including the most remote communities, with high-quality, non-commercial programming and services. The average cost per American for public broadcasting funding each year was $1.60.
  • The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) is an independent non-profit tasked with distributing appropriated federal funds to local stations. CPB prioritizes funding for public media organizations serving rural and remote communities. Nearly half of the 544 radio and television stations who received CPB funding are considered rural.
  • In addition to direct support for stations’ operating costs, CPB also funded vital infrastructure for public media organizations including satellite interconnection, emergency alert systems, music licensing, educational program development, and more.
  • The CPB supported KUOW in two ways: direct funding (about 5% of our total revenue) and access to vital infrastructure like satellite interconnection and emergency alert systems. We estimate the annual value of their support at $1.4M.
