The chameleon sounds of Portland’s Unknown Mortal Orchestra
KUOW’s Morning Edition host, Emily Fox has been taking time on Fridays to check in on music coming out of the Pacific Northwest.
This week she spoke with OPB music’s Jerad Walker about the latest album by Unknown Mortal Orchestra.
“They've been chameleons throughout their career,” Walker said.
The band seems to have a little bit for everyone. After dabbling in psych rock and a little bit of disco, you can hear R&B influences in their new track, "Not In Love We’re Just High":
The new album also features grimy-sounding 1970s rock with their track, "American Guilt":
Despite all the widely varying genres, Walker said, “You never feel like you are listening to a different band. They have their own sound and they imprint it on every single genre that they dabble in.”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s new album is out April 6. The band will perform at Seattle’s Moore Theater on May 7.
