Climate disasters force Princeville, NC, residents to relocate to higher ground

Princeville, North Carolina, is America’s oldest community founded by formerly enslaved people. The historic town has been devastated by countless floods and other climate-fueled disasters since it was created. Now the residents have decided to relocate the town to higher ground in a plan funded by FEMA.

We speak to Grist’s Jake Bittle on how the town will give up its historic territory and move to safer land — but only after decades of delay and disintegration.
