For many students, it’s spring break and that means more play time. But for those who rely on school breakfasts and lunches, it means a week of going without.

Some food banks are helping fill that gap.

Volunteers at Ballard Food Bank usually pack up bags of food that will go out to Seattle school students for the weekend.

“On spring break, we double pack,” said executive director Jen Muzia.

Some bags will be customized based on the child’s dietary needs: “We’ve got some gluten-free bread, there’s peanut butter, there’s bananas and apples, looks like some soups.”

Fresh produce will get added later. The bags will be delivered to 18 Northwest schools in the Seattle area.

Muzia said students’ families are also welcome to drop by at the food bank during spring break.
