Halloween options collide as fall finally arrives in Seattle

We set aside Thursdays to get read-in on upcoming arts and culture events in and around Seattle. This week, when we finally got hit with fall, and with Halloween right around the corner, we looked for some fun, maybe scary ways to mark the season.

KUOW’s Kim Malcolm chatted with pop culture writer Matt Baume. He's part of the events team for The Stranger and EverOut. Matt also hosts the podcast The Sewers of Paris, where queer people share personal stories about the entertainment that changed their lives.

Seattle Farmers Markets Applelooza 2022

The first pick is not scary at all. It’s a celebration of autumn. The Seattle Farmers Markets are putting on an apple harvest festival. There's going to be apple tastings, apple -themed trivia, raffles, and other activities.

Pumpkin Bash, at Woodland Park Zoo

That's the autumn event where all the animals are given pumpkins they can play with, or eat, or whatever they want to do to them. I'm very excited to see the lemurs, and jaguars, and hippos and all those things get some gourds to roll around.

Seattle Gaymers Halloween Party, at CC’s

This is not just for the gay gamers. It's for queer gamers, and allies, and gamers of all kinds. This is a 21-plus event at CC’s on Capitol Hill. They're going to have a costume contest and raffle. Of course, everybody should show up in their best queer gamer, or gamer-adjacent cosplay.

Collide-O-Scope, at Seattle’s SIFF Cinema Egyptian

This is an amazing found footage of phantasmagoria, where hosts Shane Wahlund and Michael Anderson collect these incredible clips of pop culture ephemera and edit them into these wild montages. You never know what you're gonna get.

The Craft, at Central Cinema

This movie is sort of a combination of Mean Girls and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You've got this group of high school girls who decide to embark on an adventure through witchcraft. The typical high school drama ensues but heightened with magical powers and rivalries. It's a movie that simultaneously ages really well, and also is such a time capsule of 1996.
