IKEA Makes Public Its Swedish Meatballs Recipe For Customers On Lockdown
The recipe for IKEA's famous meatballs has only seven ingredients and includes instructions for how to make the sauce. The recipe comes with step-by-step, illustrated instructions.
There's an older version of the recipe that suggests using boiled potatoes and flour instead of breadcrumbs. The recipe IKEA recently shared on Twitter is simplified (and heavier on the beef).
Meatballs (30–40 meatballs, serves 4)
500g (1.1 lb) minced beef
250g (1/2 lb) minced pork
100g (1/2 c) breadcrumbs
1 egg
5 tbsp cream (or milk)
1 onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed or minced
salt
pepper
allspice (optional)
Mix all the ingredients into a smooth texture and flavor generously with salt, pepper and fine-crushed allspice (optional). Shape the mixture into round balls and place on a plate in the fridge to cool for two hours. To cook, slowly brown them in a little butter (the original recipe called for 4-5 tbsp butter).
Cream sauce
Dash of oil
40 g (1/3 c) butter
40 g (1/3 c) plain flour
150 ml (5 oz) vegetable stock
150 ml (5 oz) beef stock
150 ml (5 oz) thick double cream
2 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
Make a roux with the butter, oil and flour (slowly add flour to the hot butter and oil while constantly stirring until creamy — about two minutes). Add the stocks, cream, soy sauce and mustard while continuing to stir. Allow to simmer until desired thickness.
Serve the cream and the meatballs with freshly boiled potatoes, lingonberry jam, a green salad and salted or pickled gherkins.
