This weekend people around the world celebrate the lunar new year; in China, it’s the start of the Year of the Rat. Here in the Pacific Northwest you can observe the holiday at a number of gatherings.

KUOW’s Arts and Culture reporter Marcie Sillman offers these suggestions for new year festivities plus a few other weekend cultural offerings.

LUNAR NEW YEAR

Saturday, January 25, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.: Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience offers a fair and celebration. Children and students free of charge.

Saturday, January 25, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.: Mercer Island Chinese Association celebration at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Saturday, January 25, 1 - 4 p.m.: Tacoma’s Crescent Moon Gifts hosts a Chinese New Year celebration.

Saturday, January 25-Sunday, January 26: Vancouver British Columbia hosts citywide lunar new year festivities.


MUSIC

Sunday, January 26, 2 p.m.: Rhythms of Iceland at the National Nordic Museum in Ballard.

Saturday, January 25, 2 p.m.: Benaroya Hall-Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra program “Legendary Women.”



FILM

Saturday January 25, Sunday January 26: Wa Na Wari and On The Boards present filmmaker Amir George and “Whispering into the Void.”

DANCE
