Where to get out of the dangerous cold around Seattle
Freezing temperatures and more snow are in the forecast for the Seattle area this week.
Some cities around the region will open severe weather shelters for people experiencing homelessness to escape the cold.
This year in Seattle, at least eight people died from hypothermia while experiencing homelessness, according to the Homeless Remembrance Project. The National Weather Service forecasts daytime high temperatures across Seattle may struggle to reach freezing every day this week. Overnight lows could drop to as low as the single digits.
“It's been many years since those of us at the Weather Service in Seattle have seen forecast data like this,” said Reid Wolcott, a Warning Coordination Meteorologist. “Much like the heat effect that we experienced earlier this year."
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said last Thursday that the dangerously low tempertaures this week will be the most extreme the city has seen in more than a decade.
Families with children seeking shelter can call the King County Emergency Family Intake Line at 206-245-1026.
