Looking for ways to celebrate MLK Day? Here are 7 Seattle area options
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January. This year, the national holiday falls on King’s actual birthday, Jan. 15.
King is known and remembered for his pivotal role as a spokesman and leader during the Civil Rights Movement. He protested against racial discrimination and supported federal civil rights legislation.
In November of 1961, King visited Washington state for the first and what is believed to be the only time. He gave a speech to 2,000 students in Meany Hall at the University of Washington, and he spoke at two assemblies at Garfield High School in the Central District.
King left a legacy that spans beyond the United States, but his visit to Seattle and his contributions to justice led to a special legacy in our region, where King County, originally named after William Rufus DeVane King, who was elected vice president in 1852, was officially changed to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 2005.
